Howard's Life

Created by Kathleen one month ago
Dad was born in 1928 in Clevedon, Somerset.  He lived in Clevedon most in his childhood with brother Michael, and twin sisters Pam and Pauline he enjoyed the company of his grandparents and extended family. He moved to Swindon in the 1940’s when his father moved to work on the Great Western Railway as a guard.
As I understand he did go back to Clevedon or Walton in Gordano for some time during the war.  The railways were always very special to dad he was a Great Western Railway fanatic he loved Steam trains and was an avid collector and model maker.   One of his other interests was the American Civil War.  He had many other interests and was a very clever man with a fantastic memory regarding times and dates of every event of interest in his past.  He had one big adventure in 1951, when he and a mate decided to go to what was Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).  He worked as a shunter on the Rhodesian Railway, Sadly the adventure was cut short to only 8 months due to ill health and he was glad to be back home in the arms of his family.  He worked in a few trades plumbing, building, but in the end, He settled as shunter at the Press Steel Fisher plant in Swindon.
Working in the various trades made him a prolific DIY man, he was very good at all sorts of construction and repairs and was a very talented model maker.
Family was very special to dad, not just immediate family but his extended family at home and around the world. He kept in touch with long interesting letters going into great detail of whatever interest he thought the recipient would appreciate.
His biggest passion was for my mum.  It seems it was love at first sight and he worshiped her until the day he died which was just 3 weeks before their 69th wedding anniversary.
Dad was a great writer and he has put a lot of his memories and adventures down on paper for us to enjoy in the future.
All his children and grandchildren loved him so much. he will be greatly missed.  But he has left us all many memories both in our Hearts and thoughts.  And also, a great photo library, diaries and stories for us all to read.
